Arielle Schechter is a registered architect and AIA member based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina specializing in modern and modernist residential architecture including both renovations and new construction. The clients’ needs, lots of natural light, connection to the outdoors, mediating extremes of climate and site sensitivity are primary concerns on every job.  Other specialties include modern interior design, the renovation of mid-century modern houses, custom furniture and light fixture design, and the design of native plant and wildlife habitat gardens.

I listen to and respect each client and earnestly wish to improve my clients’ lives through the making of a beautiful and useful space.  I believe that all jobs are important and have appreciated each job, no matter how small.

Independent architecture studies and travels in Japan, Europe, Scandinavia, Southern and Northern California have been great teachers, as well as learning from my own geographical region:  the humid southeastern US and the beautiful state of North Carolina.

My greatest architectural inspiration is daylight in all its differing forms:  the differences between the colors and intensities of north, south, east and west light and the interplay of light and shadow.

I love clean lined design and have a special place in my heart for mid-century-modern houses, which I love to design renovations for.

In my home life I am supported by a wonderful husband and many rescued animals who provide constant delight.  I volunteer with Durham’s IAR (Independent Animal Rescue) and the NCSU Veterinary School’s Turtle Team.

I never met an animal I didn’t like, and my studio space often has at least one foster cat or convalescing foster turtle to welcome clients.

I am honored to have served on the very first advisory board of Triangle Modernist Houses, one of the nation’s leading historical archives of modernist homes.
