Lamvik-Kamel Mid Century Modern Renovation

After: The new fireplace surround is now a focal poin.

The Lamvik-Kamel residence in Durham, NC was a mid century dating from the mid 1940's.  The house, however, lacked some of the most important features that are associated with mid century design: light, through views (uninterrupted sight lines), cohesiveness and a sense of flow in the public spaces, and at least one special detail that would amp up the style factor.

The owners, scientists and artists, had a keen sense of color and form.  We redid the old fireplace which had been covered with faux black stone.  The new face is dimensional custom tile from Heath in California.  We added downlights to show off the sculptural form of the tile and to bring a sense of light and shadow to the new fireplace face.

The spaces were opened up to allow better flow from kitchen - dining - living room.  A new window was added on axis with the expanded vista.

The renovation was on a tight budget, but we were able to inject style and function into this little house.
